What to Pack for an Indian Safari
Neutral layers, sun protection, binoculars and a little patience — a practical checklist for comfortable, respectful safaris.
Dress in neutral, muted colours — olive, khaki, brown, grey. Avoid bright colours, white and camouflage patterns, which are prohibited in some reserves.
Layer for the morning. Winter dawn drives are cold in an open vehicle; by mid-morning you will be peeling layers off. A windproof outer layer, fleece, buff and gloves transform a December drive.
Bring sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, high-factor sunscreen and sunglasses. Dust is constant, so pack lip balm, eye drops and a lens cloth.
Binoculars are the single most underrated item. A pair of 8x42s will improve every drive, whether or not a tiger appears.
Finally, bring patience. The forest sets the pace, and the best sightings usually come to those content to sit quietly and wait.
