Ranthambore vs Bandhavgarh

Both reserves deserve their fame, and both can deliver superb tiger encounters. They are, however, very different experiences.

Ranthambore is the easier of the two to reach: a short train ride from Delhi, Agra or Jaipur places you at the gate, which makes it the natural choice for travellers combining tigers with the Golden Triangle. Its dry deciduous forest, lakes and ruins produce photographs that could not come from anywhere else.

Bandhavgarh is deeper in Central India and takes more effort to reach, but rewards you with a higher density of tigers within a smaller core and a more classically forested landscape of sal, bamboo and grassy maidans.

For a first, short trip built around convenience and cultural context, Ranthambore is hard to beat. For a dedicated tiger safari where sightings are the priority, Bandhavgarh usually wins — and many travellers, given ten days or more, simply do both.
